The Menstrual Cycle

The starting point for fertility acupuncture is to establish the nature of the woman’s menstrual cycle. I will ask, for example, about your cycle length, any pain (before, during or after the period,) the length and nature of the bleed, any clotting, any spotting or emotional symptoms.

I will probably discuss some nutritional issues with you and ask you about any medical investigations and/or diagnoses you may have had. We can discuss whether you have ever tracked your cycle and, if necessary measure your basal body temperature (BBT). Amongst other things this can help determine when ovulation occurs. More information about charting your temperature can be obtained here.

The chart below shows an optimal cycle of 28 days, although regular cycles of between 26-32 are considered perfectly normal. The follicular/Yin phase is about egg development and thickening of the uterine lining. The luteal/Yang phase is about egg release and maintaining progesterone levels. Treatments are focused at particular times of the cycle and initially I prefer to treat on a weekly basis for two, if not three cycles (if possible.)
